Graco, Minneapolis,
MN
Contact: Ms. Patricia Hudziak, Product Communications Manager
Possible Applied Field(s): will be advised
Currently Graco takes on interns from UW-Eau Claire's English major with a concentration
in technical writing. However, Graco is looking for students with
a better grounding in Technical Communication. As a heavy manufacturing
company, Graco will provide experiences with manual writing and
editing with the possibility of working on other documents generated
by the company.

Nestle, Eau
Claire, WI
Contacts: Ms. Cindy Walker or Ms. Kristy Martin
Possible Applied Field(s): Training & Development, Quality Management,
Biomedical Engineering, Materials, and Packaging.
The plant in
Eau Claire produces infant formula for a worldwide market. Standard
operating procedures as well as training and development materials
will be a large part of what co-op students will be assigned to
write and edit. Redesigning and importing existing documents from
Microsoft Word to a page layout program, such as Adobe Pagemaker,
QuarkXpress, or Adobe InDesign, may also be a part of this assignment.
Because documents must adhere to strict standards set by the Federal
Food & Drug Administration, much like the pharmaceutical industry
must do, students with an Applied Field in Biomedical Engineering
can apply much of what they've learned in their studies.

Prisma
International,
Minneapolis, MN
Contact: Mr. Aki Ito, Vice President of Operations
Possible Applied Field(s): International Studies, Applied Languages
minor, Spanish minor, International Business, Business and Management,
and Project Management.
Students
would work with Terry Thompson, Vice President of Business Development
in managing documentation projects. With its origins as a translation
and localization company, Prisma International still
attracts many documentation projects involving translation. The
company is now launching a total documentation service, called "Spectrum," which
handles clients' documents from the early points of content management
to localization where needed. Students working in this co-op should
have first-rate organizational skills. Completion of INMGT-363
Project Management is helpful. Likewise, foreign language study
and study abroad experiences are helpful, though not required.

Contact: Ms. Stephanie Jax, Corporate Recruiter
stephanie.jax@thomson.com
Possible Applied Field(s): Training
and Development, Quality Management, Graphic Communication Management,
Telecommunications, Business & Management,
Computer Science, International Business, International Studies,
Art and Design, and Multimedia.
This company
is the largest publisher of law books in the U.S. and provides
an online legal database called "Westlaw." In Eagan,
the editorial division alone employs a staff of 2,000. The contacts
from the Legal and Regulatory Division tell us that their division
alone can likely employ two to four co-op students during summer
2004 as technical writers. Their documentation activities will
include writing and editing training and development materials,
standard operating procedures, and instructions for the printing
equipment.
